Panthers shut down Wildcats

West Side rival Reitz shut out Mater Dei for the second straight year 26-0.  With the victory, Reitz won the SIAC and City championships outright.  Mater Dei twice had the ball inside the Reitz 10 yard line but failed to score.  You can't come up empty in those situations and expect to stay in the game against a team like Reitz.

Annual Westside battle takes place Friday

It's that time of year again for the battle of the Westside between Mater Dei and Reitz.  Reitz enters the contest undefeated in SIAC play with their lone loss out of state.  A victory would give the Panters the outright SIAC championship.  The Wildcats will need to play mistake free football and capitalize on their scoring opportunities to win this game.

MD Freshman stay undefeated with win over Castle

In a battle of unbeatens, Mater Dei's freshman team jumped out to a 14-6 halftime lead against Castle behind two long touchdown passes from Dane Maurer to Dalton Brandenstine.  The Wildcats made that lead stand up as they defeated previously unbeaten Castle 28-12.  Brandenstine added another touchdown run in the second half and Maurer scored on a quarterback sneak for the other touchdown.  With the victory, the freshman secured at least a share of the SIAC and City championships.

Mater Dei travels to Paradise to take on Knights

Mater Dei will try to get back on the winning track as they travel to Paradise to face the Castle Knights.  The Knights feature the best QB - WR combo in the area with 3 year starting QB Graham Saiko and WR Tyler Schlaf.  The Knights will be coming into this game as the favorite with a 6-1 record.  Mater Dei will need to find a way to put more points on the board and win the battle at the line of scrimmage if they want to come out with a victory.

The Wildcats have won 5 straight against the Knights and lead the overall series 18-17.

Wildcats fall to Tigers in OT

Although leading virutally the entire game, Mater Dei was unable to hold off the Tigers in the final seconds, eventually falling in overtime.  It was a bitter pill to swallow as this game was one the Wildcats probably feel they should have put away.  The going stays tough this week when Mater Dei travels to Mt. Vernon.  There should be plenty of motivation as this team could easily and probably should be undefeated right now only to be sitting with 2 losses.

Mater Dei to face huge test Saturday against Memorial

Memorial Helmet  MD Helmet
The first step in a brutal 4 game stretch to end the regular season begins Saturday as Mater Dei travels to Enlow field to take on the Memorial Tigers at 4:00.  The Tigers are led by 3 year junior starter QB Grant Gribbons.  Gribbons is one of the best quarterbacks in the area and has a host of good receivers to throw to.  Senior running back Ryan Black has done a nice job on the ground for the Tigers and helps balance the offense.

The Wildcats come in to the game after a tough 8-0 victory last Saturday over Harrison.  Mater Dei's offense failed to score but the defense kept the Warriors out of the endzone.  Although there were some players banged up due to injury, they will need a much better performance to come away with a victory.  The team who controls the line of scrimmage the best on each side of the ball will be critical in this battle.

Defense carries Wildcats to win

Mater Dei won a defensive battle with the Harrison Warriors 8-0 Saturday night.  On a night where the offense was out of synch, the defense held the Warriors from scoring and insured the victory.  It doesn't get any easier for the Wildcats as they travel back to Enlow Field Saturday afternoon to do battle with the Memorial Tigers.

King's big game carries Cats over Dogs

Nolan King's 196 yards rushing and 4 touchdowns propelled Mater Dei over visiting Bosse Friday night.  The Wildcats started off slowly, clinging to a 7-0 halftime lead. After a lightning delay, the Wildcats scored 3 touchdowns in the second half before giving way to the reserves with a 28-0 lead.  The Cats move on to a date with Harrison Saturday night at Enlow Field.  Mater Dei has now beaten the Bulldogs 14 straight times.

Mater Dei used a powerful running attack led by Brent Weinzapfel and a stout defense to shut out the North Huskies 21-0 Saturday.  Weinzapfel finished the game with over 240 yards rushing as the Wildcats offensive line opened up some nice holes for the running game.  Mater Dei is now 23-29 lifetime against the Huskies.

A pair of 1-1 teams meet up this Saturday at the Bowl as the North Huskies visit Mater Dei.  The Wildcats will be looking to rebound from a tough loss in the last seconds against Central last Friday.  The Huskies come in to the game averaging over 400 yards of total offense.  As for offense, the Wildcats will be looking to generate more of their own.  The offense was improved last week but had trouble finishing off drives in the red zone.  Gametime is 12:30.

Wildcats lose heartbreaker to Bears

The Central Bears defeated the Mater Dei Wildcats 17-12 Friday night on a long catch and run for a touchdown, grasping victory from the jaws of defeat.  Mater Dei led most of the game and won the battle of statistics, but in the end could not find a way to win.  It doesn't get any easier this Saturday when North pays a visit to the Bowl for a 12:30 tipoff.

Cats face big test Friday against the Bears

Last year, first year head coach Andy Owen took his team into Reitz Bowl and gutted out an emotional 17-14 overtime victory over Mater Dei.  This Friday, the Cats will look to avenge that loss in what should be another tough game when they travel to Central Stadium to take on the Central Bears.  Last week the Bears started their season out with a bang registering a 40-0 whitewashing of Harrison.  Central's strength the last few years have been their offensive and defensive lines.  Both teams pitched shutouts in Week 1 so a defensive battle is expected.  Mater Dei will be looking to get a bit more consistency from their offense and that may be the deciding factor in whether or not they prevail Friday night.

Wildcats pitch shutout in season opener

The Wildcats defeated South Spencer 21-0 Friday night.  Although their play was inconsistent throughout, Mater Dei was able to keep the Rebels out of the endzone. John Kercher came up big when he stuffed a South Spencer running back on 4th and goal from the 1 yard line.  The Rebels were much improved from last year and proved to have a good scheme to limit the damage tailback Brent Weinzapfel could deliver.  The Wildcats are no doubt still trying to find the right pieces that fit.  Coach Mike Goebel will be hoping for improvement throughout this week as Mater Dei faces a tough challenge this Friday when they travel to Central Stadium.  The Bears defeated the Wildcats 17-14 in overtime last year.  Check back later this week for the preview of Friday night's game.

Mater Dei opens the season against South Spencer Friday

The Mater Dei Wildcats open up their season Friday night at home against Sectional 32 rival South Spencer.  The Wildcats start this season looking to plug holes from major graduation losses.  This is nothing new for Mike Goebel and his coaching staff as they normally rely heavily on seniors to lead the way.  Two seniors who figure to play big roles this season are returning quarterback Joe Major and running back Brent Weinzapfel.

South Spencer returns most of their starters from last season and look to be improved this year.  The Wildcats defeated the Rebels twice last season and expect a tough fight this go around.  Game time is at 7:00 at Reitz Bowl Friday.  Be sure to arrive early Friday as the Mater Dei Men's Club is hosting their annual tailgater before the game.
